Our Story
Compassion International connects compassionate people with children living in poverty. Our beginnings trace back to 1952, when an American evangelist, Rev. Everett Swanson, saw firsthand the plight of orphans in the Korean War. Swanson was deeply troubled to see that the “piles” were not rags but frozen bodies of orphans who had died overnight in the street.
On the airplane home, Swanson heard a simple message resounding in his head. As the engines whirred, he listened to the challenge, “What are you going to do? What are you going to do?” repeatedly. By the time his plane landed, Swanson had made a decision: God had moved him with compassion, so he needed to take action.
Jesus defined compassion with the story of the Good Samaritan: “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them.” (Luke 10:33-34a, NLT)
He gave two simple commands: love God and love your neighbor as yourself. The Pharisees immediately followed with a question: “Who is my neighbor?” The neighbor, Jesus explained, was the injured man the Good Samaritan encountered on the side of the road. This man was vulnerable and marginalized, neither friend nor ally. And yet the Good Samaritan saw his neighbor, felt compassion, and moved with compassion.
This is our call as the people of God—to enter a compassionate way of living. To see suffering, feel sympathy, and become love in action. Because God sees, knows, and loves us, we are connected and unified in a shared human experience—a move of compassion. This disrupts poverty, overturns apathy, and carries us into a story greater than our own. We are good neighbors in Jesus’ name because we were once injured and hopeless on the side of the road, and Jesus moved toward us.
What Makes Us Distinct
Compassion is a Christ-centered, child-focused, church-driven organization that connects compassionate people, churches, and organizations with children who live in poverty.

Christ-Centered
Transformation only happens through the love of Jesus. He is the center of our ministry; everything we do for children is meant to reflect God’s heart. Compassion gives hope to the hopeless by meeting practical needs and sharing the good news about Jesus in a culturally relevant, unconditional way to all we serve.

Church Driven
God calls believers worldwide to show compassion to the “least of these.” This is true for supporters far away from the child and local churches who drive programmatic interventions. These churches have consistent and trusted presences in the community that know the unique local needs, the culture, and the children we serve together.

Child Focused
Breaking the cycle of poverty starts with children. We engage each child individually to see them thrive toward their God- given potential.
Guiding Lights: Our Core Values
What shapes who we are and what we Strive for.

Integrity
God desires his people to live undivided lives where heart, soul, mind, and body are consistently working together to increasingly reflect the character of Jesus in all settings and circumstances. Thoughts, words, and actions are to be congruent and reliable.

Discernment
God guides his people in multiple ways (through Scripture, prayer, wise counsel, and expertise) to make community-affirmed, Spirit-led decisions as they pursue God’s will in accomplishing his mission together.

Dignity
Each person is created in God’s image and bears God’s likeness. Compassion seeks to reflect the example of Jesus in showing honor, respect, and love to all people.

Stewardship
All resources entrusted to Compassion (people, time, money, knowledge, reputation, and materials) are precious to our mission. Therefore, all resources are protected and deployed with great care and wisdom to maximize both short- and long-term impact.

Excellence
This is not perfection, but rather doing the very best with the resources on hand to advance the mission. Excellence honors God and inspires people.
