Compassion-Supported Youth Take the Lead in Kenya Children’s Assembly Elections in Makueni County
The Makueni County Government reached a significant milestone by launching the Kenya Children’s Assembly, Makueni.

The Makueni County Government reached a significant milestone by launching the Kenya Children’s Assembly, Makueni. This Assembly provides a formal platform for children to discuss topics that affect their lives, such as education, health, protection, safety, and overall well-being. Additionally, it provides children with hands-on experience in leadership, civic engagement, democratic processes, and advocating for their rights.

The launch and elections brought together children from all over Makueni County to choose leaders who will advocate for their peers and for children’s welfare. The event was graced by Engineer Sebastian Kyoni, the County Executive Committee Member for Gender, Children, Youth, Sports, and Social Services, along with officials from the State Department for Children Services. A key highlight was the impressive performance of children involved in Compassion-supported church partner projects in Makueni, who secured seven of the ten available positions. Notably, Shama Mwenda, a participant in the Compassion program, was elected Governor of the Kenya Children’s Assembly in Makueni County, the assembly’s highest leadership role.

This achievement highlights how intentional investments in children, such as mentorship, leadership programs, child protection, and participation initiatives, are making a significant impact. Collaborating with local church partners, children are building confidence, understanding their rights and duties, and using their voices to promote positive change. Elected leaders now have a clear platform to involve children in decision-making at both t he county and national levels. Their leadership not only amplifies children’s voices in Makueni County but also inspires other children and adolescents to participate in leadership, advocacy, and community development.
