Kitui Women Representative Partners with AIC Kanzinwain to Support Menstrual Health and Empower Girls

In numerous communities throughout Kenya, menstrual health is a frequently neglected yet essential aspect of girls’ well-being, education, and dignity. At AIC Kanzinwa, a Compassion Frontline Church Partner in Kitui County, initiatives are being implemented to directly address this issue.

AIC Kanzinwa supports 323 participants, including 179 girls. Among them, 103 girls are of reproductive age and experience monthly menstruation. For many, poverty significantly hampers access to appropriate menstrual hygiene products. Although sanitary pads are the most commonly available option in the region, many families find them unaffordable.

In addition to financial obstacles, cultural taboos about menstruation continue to impede open dialogue and access to essential information. Nonetheless, notable progress has been made in educating both participants and caregivers about menstrual health and hygiene. These discussions have contributed to reducing stigma, empowering girls with knowledge, and creating a supportive atmosphere where menstruation is regarded as a natural aspect of life rather than something shameful.

Acknowledging the ongoing necessity, AIC Kanzinwa contacted the Kitui County Women Representative’s office for assistance. Through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) program, this office kindly donated two cartons of sanitary towels. These pads were then distributed to girls at the center who had limited or no access to menstrual products.

This impactful intervention has had a profound impact on the lives of the girls. In addition to meeting a basic need, the donation has instilled a sense of dignity and self-confidence in the girls, allowing them to concentrate on their studies without the fear or shame that often accompanies inadequate menstrual care.

As one caregiver expressed, “For many of us, this support is more than just a package of pads—it brings hope, dignity, and reduces one worry for our daughters each month.”
